A Brief History of Fairway Travel

BrowndogUncategorized

As many of you may know, we’ve been creating bespoke travel itineraries for the world’s golfing elite for just over 25 years, and what a great 25 years we’ve had! In honour of a quarter of a century in business, we thought we’d take a trip down memory lane and share with you how it all began.

One up, One Down

It was in 1990 that David Grice and Alan Muff formed what was formerly known as Fairway Leisure Travel – the same year 0.1% of the UK population had access to the internet, channel tunnel workers from the UK and France met 40 metres beneath the sea bed for the first time, and Nick Faldo won The Masters for the second year in a row.

Operating from a small ‘one up, one down’ terraced house in Elland, West Yorkshire, our business began with just four staff, including David and Alan the two directors. Initially, we were providing travel services exclusively for professional golfers on the European Tour, but fast-forward two years and we acquired the PGA European Tour account. We began organising travel for the tour staff including tournament directors, greenkeepers etc, as well as the golfers.

Welcome to the World Of Motorsports

After trading successfully for seven years and gaining a customer base that boasted many of the world’s professional golfers, we decided the time was right to expand and we dipped our toe into the world of motor sport. We began providing travel services to those involved with the World Rally Championship; more specifically we were working with M-Sport featuring Ford, an account which we still support today. Despite our expansion into new markets, we retained our penchant for providing a personal service for each of our clients, which is why today we’re one of the most trusted, specialist travel agencies in the UK.

As we moved into the ‘Noughties’ we branched out once more, this time with the European Tour Productions and other media organisations. Not only were we flying golfers, their teams and tour professionals to over 60 countries annually, we were also responsible for those reporting on the tournaments.

In spring 2002 we waved goodbye to David, one of the founding directors. He’d had enough of the British weather and decided to up sticks to Australia.

ETTS

Seven happy years followed, when we further established ourselves as the go-to travel provider for professional golfers within the UK and solidified our status by we entering into a joint venture with the European Tour.

Our venture in 2009 saw the creation of ‘European Tour Travel Services’ or ETTS as it’s now known. Our dedicated team of travel experts began travelling the world with the European Tour, offering onsite travel assistance to our clients and have done so ever since. We’re very lucky to work in places like Mauritius, Fiji and Australia! #perks

In more recent years we sadly said goodbye to Alan Muff, one of our founding directors, who passed away in 2012. Our remaining co-directors Andrew Marsden, Howard Watson and Mark Dixon took full ownership and control and we moved to our current premises in the Salt Warehouse in Sowerby Bridge.

The Salt Warehouse has been the hub of operations for nearly a year now. We’ve recruited an additional team member and we still continue to create tailor-made itineraries for the best golfers in the world.
